This is a non-shooting course and teaches students the basic knowledge, skills, and to explain the attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of firearms and ammunition in the home. This course deals with the storing and caring for a firearm in the home. There is an emphasis on children and learning gun safety. The main cause of firearm related accidents in the home can be traced to improper handling or lack of education with firearms. This course of instruction, while not designed to teach the student marksmanship or accuracy, will teach the student what to do should they encounter an unattended firearm.
Students are taught the three rules for safe gun handling: primary causes of firearms accidents; firearm parts; how to unload certain action types; ammunition components; cleaning; care; safe storage of firearms in the home.

This is a four hour course for safe gun handling that is conducted in the classroom only. Students are taught NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling; primary causes of firearms accidents; firearm parts; how to unload certain action types; ammunition components; cleaning; care; safe storage of firearms in the home; and the benefits of becoming an active participant in the shooting sports. Students will receive the NRA Home Firearm Safety handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Basic Firearm Training Program brochure, course completion certificate. Students will learn the basic fundamentals of semi-automatic pistols, revolvers, rifles and shotguns, how to safely load and unload them.
This class provides firearms instructions, but there is no live fire or range shooting.
